Shakespeare’s zaniest comedy is laugh-out-loud funny with an endearing twist

Sir John Falstaff, the aging and rotund knight, arrives in Windsor with his entourage of rascals nearly broke and desperate for money. In order to solve his financial problems, he decides to woo two rich housewives, Mistress Ford and Mistress Page. Falstaff is not the “sharpest knife in the drawer” however, so he sends the wives identical love notes. Unfortunately for Sir John, the wives are best friends and quickly discover that they have received duplicate notes. Being doubly offended by Falstaff’s assumption that they would cheat on their husbands and that he also had the gall to send them identical notes, they hatch a plot to seek revenge upon him.

The Merry Wives of Windsor is a farcical play with lots of zany action and physical comedy. It is thought that the play was written at the request of Queen Elizabeth I who wanted to see another play featuring Falstaff, one of her favorite characters from Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Parts 1 & 2.
