The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark
Written by William Shakespeare
Co-Directed by John S. Kuhn and Nick Baldasare
May 22 – June 22 / Thursdays through Sundays / 8pm
Schiller Park, Amphitheatre Stage

Explore the human condition through the depth of sensibility not the particularities of gender

This summer’s version of Hamlet is set in the late Victorian era during the suffragette movement with the role of Hamlet performed by a woman, playing it as a man. While Hamlet is the most widely produced play in Shakespeare’s repertoire, our casting of the lead invites viewers to look at the play anew. Hamlet proves that solitude, despair, doubt, revenge, and betrayal are all qualities of the human condition that transcend gender.

Hamlet’s father has died and his mother quickly remarries her deceased husband’s brother, Claudius. The title of King of Denmark goes to Claudius and puts him in the role of surrogate father to Hamlet. Hamlet’s father appears as a ghost to explain that he was murdered by Claudius and commands Hamlet to take revenge.

Actors’ Theatre would like to dedicate the entire run of this production to the memory of our dear friend, Carl Novak. May he always be acting, singing, and painting!
