CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

Note: All roles will be portrayed as Female-Identifying or Non-binary characters and will therefore be cast exclusively with Female-Identifying (F-I) or Non-binary (NB) actors. Actors will also double for minor dramatis personae. In this romantic comedy actors will need to explore flirtation, power, and sexual innuendo.

KATE (F-I or NB)
30’s-40’s the eldest child of Baptista. Known in Padua for her wild and erratic behavior. Railing against injustice and alienation. Loves to feel powerful in a battle of wills.

PETRUCHIO (F-I or NB)
30’s-40’s Suitor of Kate. Friends with Hortensio, looking for a wealthy wife. Confident, unflappable, “daddy is a state of mind.”

BIANCA (F-I or NB)
20’s-30’s Kate’s sister/sibling. Known for her beauty and mild manner, definitely aware her beauty and mildness are her currency.

BAPTISTA (F-I or NB)
40’s-70’s  Parent of Kate and Bianca. Very wealthy and worried to settle his children in marriage.

LUCENTIO/CAMBIO (F-I or NB)
20’s-30’s Suitor of Bianca. Young student from Pisa to Padua to study at the university there. Hopeless romantic.

HORTENSIO/LITIO (F-I or NB)
20’s-40’s Suitor of Bianca. Friends with Petruchio. Up for antics but ultimately practical in their search for a wife.

GREMIO (F-I or NB)
40’s-70’s Suitor of Bianca. Rich, entitled, and absurdly too old to be wanting to marry young Bianca.

TRANIO (F-I or NB)
20’s-40’s Lucentio’s servant, later impersonates Lucentio. Loyal.

GRUMIO (F-I or NB)
20-70’s Petruchio’s servant.  Not the brightest, but savvy in the unpredictable nature of their master, Petruchio.

BIONDELLO/CURTIS/WIDOW (F-I or NB)
20’s-70’s Servant to Lucentio, Butler for Petruchio, Hortensio’s scathing and independent wife.
